Emma Dunlape Grube grew up playing Suzuki cello at the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City, IA. She remembers music as an important and joyful part of her childhood, and this remains true today.

She received a B.A. in cello performance at UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master’s degree at UMass Amherst under Astrid Schween of the Juilliard String Quartet. She is certified in Suzuki books 1-5 by Dr. Tanya Carey, the former president of the Suzuki Association of Americas. Emma has also served as a teaching assistant at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp and currently teach general music and cello group classes at Kidznotes in Durham.

Performances include the Five College New Music Festival in Amherst, MA and premiering new works at the New Music series at Interlochen Summer Arts Camp. She actively performs with the cello in non-classical genres. Emma composes and performs in a rock band, Gown, and has recorded cello on projects for Chris Stamey, SOON, Between the Buried and Me and others.

Emma says, “I love the Suzuki method of teaching, but I think it is important to find a teaching style that matches how a student learns and what their interests are, whether that be Suzuki, traditional or a hybrid!”
